the stars here are hexed

At times it can seem that the comforts we’ve grown to be reliant upon are merely synthetic fabrications built from corrupted and exploited materials - if we were able to hear them speak, what might they say?

“The Stars Here are Hexed” is an audiovisual performance using footage of living material under a microscope overlaid with footage of stars, planetary systems, and computer noise. It serves as a conversation between structurally paralleled systems of vastly different scales. Excerpts of text from Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” Paolo Bacigalupi’s “The Windup Girl,” and lines of original poetry accompany the visuals. As the sequence progresses, the audio component, recorded from a modular synth, mimics human speech patterns and affects the speed at which the visuals merge and fade into one another.

Performed at the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts for Spatial and Interactive Sound Design with the guidance and assistance of Prof. Jinku Kim.
